    Hello Roth Families and Friends,

Welcome back, after another week off for February Break. It was cold and snowy in the region. If you stayed local, I hope you were able to keep safe and warm from the sub-zero windchill. If you traveled, I hope that you enjoyed time away with your family.

And, welcome to the start of this next stretch. These next seven weeks are going to provide regular opportunities to check the progress we believe we have made at Roth against the reality of full days and full weeks. This is crunch time for all of our learners, no matter the grade level. Teachers will be progressing through unit after unit, engaging and assessing students along the way. Please continue to support your student’s academic motivation and perseverance. Our counseling and mental health staff will be finalizing course requests for next year, and continuing to support student social emotional needs on an ongoing basis. Please continue to support your student’s use of healthy social-emotional wellness strategies such as goal setting, self-reflection, and communication with a trusted adult.

I am happy that we have established a foundation of expectations, procedures, and ask-fors during our 23 weeks at Roth. But a foundation is not the end of the building. It is the beginning. It is my hope that you continue to support our students and staff as we expand on what we have thus far built. One brick at a time. In the next few weeks, we will be expanding on our supports and expectations around: attendance, hallway behavior, and effort in the classroom. But, before we add on, here are some gentle reminders and upcoming events.

    ---

Unplug to Connect & Behavioral Leadership Reminders: Especially as we return from another break, it is important to restate our student personal device expectations. Student personal devices should be stored in lockers throughout the school day. Following this expectation will help us continue to work with students on their student-to-student and student-to-adult communication and interaction. Your continued support will help students focus on what they need in order to reach their academic and social-emotional wellness capacity, without being distracted by (or disengaged through) their devices. I’ll say it again: much of the student conflict we work to manage at Roth Junior High is based on posts, messages, and shares via student social media. When we unplug to connect, we have the ability to proactively talk through minor conflict so that students can develop strategies to manage discomfort, stress, and fear. And, we have the ability to celebrate each time students employ conflict resolution strategies.

Additionally, I’d like to remind Roth families and friends of our Behavioral Leadership model to develop and shape student behaviors. Our hope is for students to recognize that prosocial behaviors will be valued, celebrated, and rewarded in school and in the outside world. We also hope students recognize that the adults who work to shape and support certain behaviors do so because we are passionate about developing engaged, responsible, and safe citizens. Please review the attached Behavioral Leadership outline with your student. If you have questions, please feel free to call or send me an email. I am committed to improving the atmosphere and climate and Roth; and, I know that I need your support.

Student Drop-off and Pick-up Reminders: Those of you who drop off your student before school have likely noticed the presence of an extra vehicle each morning. One of our Transportation leaders has been working hard to keep our buses (and our students) safe upon arrival. Please continue to use the designated drop-off area each morning so that our buses can enter and exit the loop safely. We appreciate your cooperation.

Similarly, I would like to remind all families who pick their students up after school to help keep our campus and bus loop accessible for our buses. When you enter campus for after-school pick-up, please drive all the way to the designated pick-up area. Buses have reported being backed up all the way down to East Henrietta Road due to parent/guardian vehicles remaining stationary in our main drive. Again, we want our students to enter and exit school safely. And our buses need your cooperation to help do their part.

Spring Sports Registration and Info: Please click here for a message from Mr. Onze, R-H Athletic Director, regarding spring sports registration and important information. As a reminder, we are excited to add Girls Flag Football at the Modified level. We have significant interest, and tremendous talent. I believe it will be an exciting inaugural season for Flag Football.

Student Council Fun Night: Here’s an exciting event sponsored by our Student Council. The Student Council is hosting a Winter Fun Night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 7. Tickets are $5 each, and will be sold during lunches this week. Come hang out with your friends and enjoy food, drinks, games and much more! There will be a movie in the auditorium, and Open Gym. We can't wait to see you there!

Washington DC Update: (Please read below for a message from advisors Ms. Flood and Mr. Mallaber).

Attention 8th Grade DC Students, Parents, and Guardians:

Your final payment is due Friday, February 28. Each student received a balance sheet to remind you what is owed.

Also due Friday, February 28, is the white medical paperwork. Any medication, including over-the-counter medications, needs to have approval from a doctor's office using the form from the last page of the medical form packet.

Students, after your final payment and medical forms have been collected (by February 28), we will begin the partner/roommate process. This process will not begin for a student if you have not completed your medical paperwork or final payment.

    Roommate Process:

1.) You (students) will pick ONE buddy.

2.) Staff including administration, mental health, and trip advisors will put groups of TWO together to make groups of FOUR.

3.) If there is a request for a group of four, an email must be sent to Mr. Mallaber and Ms. Flood that includes all members of the group. This is not a guarantee for the group, but it will be strongly considered.

4.) There will be no changes in rooming groups once they have been created, as changes create a domino effect on others. Please choose wisely. Remember, for most of the trip, you will be with a larger group of people.

Soon on the Google Classroom, you will see forms to complete about shirt sizes and meal choices. Please only complete each form once and accurately.
