Classroom Tips - Some Suggested Accommodations
-
These classroom modifications are suggestions on what to try with an ESL student. A lot will depend on their language level. You will find that many of these suggestions will also help some of the struggling students in your classes.
Physical and Emotional
Place student near the front of the room. They can see the board and visual materials easier. You can check in to see if they're on the right page and following along.
Assign an American buddy. Seat the ESL student near someone who will be helpful and understanding. This student might help with directions, notes that can be copied, making sure that homework is recorded.
Build rapport with the ESL student. Make a point to stop and chat with the student before, during and/or after class. Check in to be sure that they have the information and materials needed.
Avoid placing the student in "competitive" activities. And some ESL students do not want to read aloud in class. Check in with them to see what their comfort level is.
Modifying Subject Content and Presentation
Whenever possible...
provide both oral and written directions
underline or outline major points
give student a copy of your lecture notes
use a highlighted text to focus on the important areas
allow the student "think time" when calling on them to answer
allow more time for regular assignments and reduce length
find a textbook at a lower language level (ex: middle school text)
provide list of important vocabulary words, key concepts
offer the student a choice of assignments
allow student to do oral presentation privately to you alone
Organizational Strategies
Allow additional time to complete tasks and take tests
Help students organize notebook or folder
Provide partial outlines
Use buddy/team system
Use graphic organizers, mapping to assist in organizing content
Testing Modifications
Allow open book or open notebook exam
Allow students more time (give uncompleted tests to ESL teacher)
Allow students opportunity to retake a test
Fill in the blanks (provide a word bank)
Use a pass/fail grading system
Provide study guides/notes
Do not penalize for errors in spelling, punctuation or grammar
Allow student to illustrate an idea rather than write description
Miscellaneous
Give the course syllabus to the ESL teacher
Keep communication open (work out best system for you and student)
Remember the ESL student's language will get better as the year progresses
Consult with the ESL teacher when you're not sure about grading
Don't give up!
