Classroom Tips - Some Suggested Accommodations

  •       These classroom modifications are suggestions on what to try with an ESL student.    A lot will depend on their language level.    You will find that many of these suggestions will also help some of the struggling students in your classes.

    Physical and Emotional

Place student near the front of the room.   They can see the board and visual materials easier.   You can check in to see if they're on the right page and following along.

Assign an American buddy.  Seat the ESL student near someone who will be helpful and understanding.  This student might help with directions, notes that can be copied, making sure that homework is recorded.

Build rapport with the ESL student.  Make a point to stop and chat with the student before, during and/or after class.  Check in to be sure that they have the information and materials needed.

Avoid placing the student in "competitive" activities.   And some ESL students do not want to read aloud in class.   Check in with them to see what their comfort level is.
