New York State ESL Achievement Test

  • ESL students are given a NY state test each spring to see how they are doing with their English skills. There are four parts: Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing. It is given by the ESL teacher in May.

This achievement test helps the school to plan for next year's schedule and how many ESL classes a student will take.

Beginner Level (Entering/Emerging):    3 ESL classes

Intermediate Level (Transitioning):  2 ESL classes

Advanced Level (Expanding):  1 ESL class

This test also helps the school decide when a student will be exited from ESL by getting a proficient score (Commanding) on all subtests.
