Hello Winslow Families,
Another wonderful week at Winslow is in the books! What a blast we all had at Fun Day! Many thanks to Mrs. Olsen and Mr. Basal for their leadership and organization of the events, to the PTO for generously donating the bounce house obstacle courses, to the teachers and staff for chaperoning and supervising, and to all who attended to cheer them on!
We are so fortunate that we beat the heat in having our event last week! As you have heard from our superintendent, Dr. Mullen, school will be closed for students on Monday (6/23) and Tuesday (6/24). We look forward to being together on Wednesday to celebrate the end of a great school year!
Social-Emotional Learning Update
Our students and staff continue to focus on our SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) traits, and over the past month, they have done an incredible job demonstrating a caring spirit. We extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to our Coin Drive in support of Golisano Children’s Hospital. It’s been wonderful to see how proud our students are to make a meaningful contribution!
Recently, our school had the special honor of writing letters to veterans participating in the Honor Flight Network—an organization dedicated to bringing veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials built in their honor. Our school was specially selected to take part in this meaningful project, and we are so proud of how our students and staff embraced the opportunity.
These letters play an important role in the veterans’ experience, as they receive them during “Mail Call” just before their return home. Each student was assigned a veteran and worked thoughtfully to create a personalized letter—asking questions, sharing a bit about themselves, and often including patriotic artwork. We shared this video link with our school to explain a little more about Mail Call for the Honor flight. If you would like to view it here is the link:

Summer Reading at Winslow: Cubs Read a-lot-l!
In honor of our very favorite axolotl, Yoshi, this summer, our theme is Winslow Cubs Read a-lot-l! During their last library visit, students learned how different parts of the brain work together to process text and become stronger readers.
We also explored two simple graphs showing how reading improves during the school year and the positive impact of summer reading. Research shows that students who don’t read over the summer can lose up to two months of progress, a setback known as the summer slide. It can take six weeks in the fall to catch up!
To help prevent this, we’re challenging all students to read at least 20 minutes per day, four days a week. Attached to the Summer Reading flyer is a reading calendar for your child to track their reading. You’ll also find directions for using our amazing eBook collection, Sora, online. Please note students need their logins for Sora which is their last name first initial last two digits of graduating year@docs.rhnet.org. Example: harneys38@docs.rhnet.org. Instructions are on page two of the flyer.
Please have your child mark the days they read and return the completed calendar to the library by September 5 with their name written at the top.
Everyone who participates will be invited to our Summer Reading Axolotl Party in September!
Speaking of Yoshi, you can check Yoshi out on his very own channel through July! Channel
Thank you for your continued support, and enjoy a fun summer filled with great books!

This week, we celebrate and extend our heartfelt gratitude to three veteran Winslow teachers: Mrs. Karen Clarke, kindergarten; Mrs. Debbie MacGowan, first grade; and Mrs. Karen Lebel, third grade. They have dedicated their careers to nurturing young minds with patience, care, and a passion for learning. Their impact on our students and school community has been immeasurable, and they will be dearly missed. Please join us in thanking Mrs. Clarke, Mrs. MacGowan, and Mrs. Lebel for their many years of service and in wishing them all the best as they embark on this exciting new chapter!Third Graders: Join Our Music Program!
If your student will be in fourth grade this fall, they can choose to join the before-school performing ensemble program. Students in fourth grade can learn to play a band or orchestra instrument and/or to sing in the chorus. More information and a registration link is available by clicking here. Please register your child for participation by June 25. Talk with your child about what they are learning in music classes and discuss the ensemble options available to them. We welcome all students to become a part of this fun and rewarding experience, continuing the rich tradition of excellence in music in R-H!
