NATURAL HELPERS

  • Natural Helpers
Natural Helpers is a peer helping program at the high school. Natural Helpers are selected through a survey of their peers and are invited to participate in a training retreat. At the retreat students gain skills in listening, identifying problem situations with their peers, and getting peers to a trusted adult when a serious situation arises. Natural Helpers are active in their school, with their friends, and in the community. They attend monthly group meetings and regular sessions to update their training on various issues. They also participate in numerous community service projects, such as the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, the MS Walk, the Books on Buses Program, preparing a breakfast for senior citizens, and giving a holiday party for underprivileged children at a city daycare center.

This program is coordinated by members of the mental health staff. BIG is a mentor program that utilizes Natural Helper High School students that have been trained as peer helpers to act as support for middle school students.

Students participate in team-building, communication skills activities, "get to know you" games and one-on-one time with their matches. 'Littles' also are treated to skits by the High School Students who role-play positive ways to interact with their peers.

Long range goals include expanding the program to other schools in the district.
