ENL Content Literacy 11th Grade

  • Course Description and Purpose:

    The overall goal of ENL Content Literacy is to help students improve their English proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening for success in their high school courses, especially in U.S. History.  This class will focus on reading of nonfiction texts including current events news articles, primary sources, textbooks, and charts/graphs.  We will work on understanding and expanding content vocabulary, as well as developing writing skills necessary for the required assessments in U.S. History. 

     

    Course Objectives:

    Students will demonstrate the following skills for success in their academic studies:

    1.     Ability to use reading strategies and respond thoughtfully to questions and/or summarize what has been read
    2.     Ability to initiate and participate in a discussion and deal effectively with input from others
    3.     Ability to use content vocabulary appropriately in written and oral tasks
    4.     Ability to organize and summarize information in order to answer CRQs
    5.     Ability to write a civic literacy essay supported by documents and outside info
    6.     Ability to research topics and present information in various ways
    7.     Ability to listen to (or view) and understand texts with which the student is unfamiliar
    8.     Ability to answer different types of multiple choice questions (maps, quotes, charts)
